Shopping and Bazaars in Turkey

Shopping in Turkey's markets and bazaars is an experience in itself. Here you'll find practical tips for haggling, ideas for the best souvenirs, and a market day calendar for the southern resorts.

I. The Art of Haggling (Pazarlık)

The Do's of Haggling

  • Be friendly and smile: Haggling is a social interaction, not a battle.
  • Make the first counter-offer: Ask for the price, then offer around 40-50% less to start.
  • Bundle your purchases: You'll get a better price if you buy multiple items from the same vendor.
  • Be prepared to walk away: If you can't agree on a price, thank the vendor politely and leave. They might call you back with a better offer.
  • Pay with cash: It's easier to get a better deal when paying with cash.

The Don'ts of Haggling

  • Don't haggle for food: Prices for fresh produce at local markets are typically fixed.
  • Don't haggle in malls: Large retail stores have fixed prices.
  • Don't start if you aren't serious: It's considered rude to bargain if you have no intention of buying.
  • Don't get offended: If a vendor doesn't lower the price, it's their right.
  • Don't flash your cash: Keep large sums of money out of sight.

Tax-Free Shopping (VAT Refund)

If you are a non-resident and make a significant purchase (usually over a certain amount, around 1000 ₺, from one store), ask the shopkeeper for a "Tax-Free" form. You will need your passport. Before your return flight, present your purchases, receipts, and the form at the airport customs office (Gümrük) to get a stamp. Do this before checking in your luggage if the items are in your suitcase. You can then get your refund from a global operator like Global Blue, also located at the airport.

Beware of Common Tourist Scams

The "New Friend": Be wary of overly friendly strangers who invite you for tea at their "brother's carpet shop." This is a common, high-pressure sales tactic. The Shoe-Shiner Trick: A shoe shiner "accidentally" drops a brush in front of you. If you pick it up, they will thank you by insisting on cleaning your shoes, then demand a high fee. Politely decline and walk on.

II. Where to Shop: Bazaars vs. Malls (AVM)

Bazaars and Markets (Pazar): This is where authentic haggling happens. They are the ideal places to buy souvenirs, spices, handicrafts, and replica goods. The atmosphere is vibrant, bustling, and an essential part of the Turkish experience. The most famous is Istanbul's Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı).

Shopping Malls (AVM - Alışveriş Merkezi): Modern, air-conditioned centers with fixed prices and international brands. There is no haggling here. They are perfect for buying clothing, electronics, and for a comfortable shopping experience.

III. What to Buy: Popular Souvenirs and Goods

Spices & Sweets

Saffron, sumac, and pul biber (red pepper flakes). Be sure to buy fresh lokum (Turkish Delight) and baklava.

Ceramics & Nazar

Hand-painted İznik-style ceramics are beautiful. The Nazar boncuğu (blue "evil eye" amulet) is a classic souvenir for good luck.

Leather & Textiles

Turkey is known for high-quality leather goods (jackets, bags) and cotton towels (pestemal) and bathrobes.

Carpets (Halı) & Kilims

Turkish carpets are world-famous. Even if you don't buy one, visiting a carpet shop is an experience in itself.

Tea, Coffee & Lamps

Bring home some apple tea (elma çayı), traditional tulip-shaped tea glasses, and Turkish coffee with a copper pot (cezve).

Brand Replicas ("Fakes")

Turkey is famous for its high-quality replica goods. Remember the customs regulations for bringing them back into the EU. Buy only for personal use.
