What is "İkram" and Why Are You Being Offered Free Tea?

One of the most pleasant and sometimes confusing experiences in Turkey is the moment when a shop owner or waiter unexpectedly brings you a glass of tea, a small dessert, or a fruit platter, free of charge. This is ikram.

What is "İkram"?

The word "ikram" literally translates to "offering," "treat," or "gift." It is an expression of hospitality (misafirperverlik) deeply rooted in Turkish culture. It is not a sales gimmick, and it doesn't mean you have to buy something. It is a sign of respect and a desire to build a good relationship with you.

How to React?

  • Accept the offer: If you have time, always accept the offer with a smile. It is the polite thing to do.
  • Don't feel obligated: Although the seller might hope you will buy something, it is not an obligation. You can calmly drink your tea, say thank you, and leave.
  • Thank them politely: After receiving the offer, it is nice to say "Teşekkür ederim" (thank you).

Ikram is one of the most beautiful examples of the warmth of Turkish culture. It's a small gesture that says, "You are a guest in my shop, not just a customer." Enjoy it!
