Turkish pharmacies (Eczane), recognizable by the large red "E" sign, are much more than just drug stores. They are primary health centers.
What Can You Get Without a Prescription?
Unlike in many parts of Europe, many medications are available over-the-counter in Turkey. After consulting with the pharmacist, you can often purchase things like:
- Stronger painkillers
- Antibiotics (for minor infections)
- Allergy medications
- Remedies for stomach issues and nausea
How to Communicate?
In most tourist areas, pharmacists speak good English. Calmly describe your symptoms, and they will find a suitable solution for you. They are professionals and will not sell you anything dangerous. At night and on holidays, there is always a duty pharmacy (Nöbetçi Eczane) in each district; the address is posted on the door of every pharmacy.
