Taking a taxi in Turkey is convenient, but as a tourist, it pays to be cautious. Here are a few golden rules.
1. "Taksimetre!"
This is the most important word. Before you get in the car, or right after, say politely but firmly to the driver, "Taksimetre, lütfen" (Meter, please). Make sure the driver turns it on. If he refuses and offers a fixed price, it is almost always to your disadvantage. Simply get out and take the next taxi.
2. Use Apps
In major cities like Istanbul and Antalya, the best method is to use apps like BiTaksi or Uber (which works in Turkey as a regular taxi-hailing app). This sets the price in advance and eliminates any misunderstandings.
3. Keep Small Bills Handy
Try to pay with exact change or smaller bills (10, 20, 50 ₺). Sometimes, drivers "don't have" change for larger notes.
