Bazaar vs. Pazar: What's the Difference?

Although the words sound similar, it's important to know the difference to find what you're looking for.

Bazaar (Çarşı)

This is a permanent, often historical and covered market that is open every day. The most famous example is Istanbul's Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı). Bazaars are primarily aimed at tourists. Here you will find:

  • Souvenirs, ceramics, lamps
  • Carpets, leather goods, replica brand items
  • Sweets and spices

Here, haggling (pazarlık) is a mandatory part of the buying process.

Pazar

This is a weekly, open-air market set up in a specific location on a specific day of the week. This is where locals do their daily shopping. Here you will find:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Cheeses, olives, honey
  • Inexpensive clothing and household goods

Here, prices are generally fixed, and there is no haggling. The prices are significantly lower than in supermarkets.
