Turkish toilets can be confusing for first-time visitors. There are two main types.
1. "Alafranga" or the Standard Western Toilet
This is the familiar seated toilet. However, next to it, you will almost always find a **taharet musluğu** – a small faucet or bidet nozzle. This is for cleaning with water after using the toilet. Paper is then used for drying. In many places, it is customary to put used paper in the bin next to the toilet, not in the bowl, to avoid clogging the pipes.
2. "Alaturka" or the Squat Toilet
What some might call a "hole in the ground," this type is found in older buildings, mosques, and rural areas. It is considered more hygienic by many as there is no direct contact with the surface. It also has a water tap and a small bucket for cleaning.
Don't be afraid; most hotels, modern restaurants, and shopping malls have modern "alafranga" toilets. But now you know what to do if you encounter the other kind!
